In my experience, I have discovered that much misery and suffering occur because of the overuse of expectations.  Agreements are far more powerful because they're collaborative. You may ask for something you expect and may find that it's impossible to accomplish as you thought. Perhaps the offered alternative is even better than what you initially proposed. Furthermore, people tend to stick to their agreements because they don't like disappointing others.
