Religion can be one of the greatest distractions from true worship...and we are all susceptible to a religious mentality taking over. It is very easy for our minds to put the focus on the secondary or peripheral things instead of what really matters. When our hope is placed in having a certain religious relic or going through a certain religious ritual we elevate the symbol to an inappropriate position, treating it like the substance. While we might feel religiously appeased, we are no less guilty of sin and therefore no less filthy before God. A faith that is rightly placed is only placed in Jesus.
