In Christ we value personal relationships above personal liberties. The second half of Romans 14 shifts the focus from your responsibility to Jesus in “doubtful things” toward your responsibility to others in these gray areas. Though we, especially as Americans, tend to view ourselves as independent, the truth is that we are interdependent and our lives affect one another in profound ways. When you see people with Jesus’s eyes then you see that whatever comfort, pleasure, or enjoyment that liberty gives is not worth comparing to the eternally valuable human soul. Everything must be able to pass the “Can I do this in faith?” test, or it must be discarded as sinfully destructive to my relationship with Jesus and others.
