We tend to put way too much focus on the image of something and way too little focus on its substance. The nation of Israel has rejected God as their king and demanded a man to lead the nation. God is all of the substance of the king that Israel needs without the image, and Saul is the polar opposite…all of the image without any of the substance. 1 Samuel 9 gives us two warnings. The first is to us to select leaders, whether personal, spiritual, or political based upon their character and not their appearance. Secondly, we must value personal character above personal appearance. If we will put our attention on taking care of who we are on the inside, then what is on the outside will naturally be taken care of as well. Jesus alone has the power to transform the human heart and give us His godly character.
