People, all people regardless of their beliefs, have been designed as worshippers. Worship is an automatic spiritual process just like breathing is an automatic physical process. You don’t get to choose if you worship, only where it goes. God is graciously and actively at work revealing our idols to us so that we might come to our senses and abandon them. The human heart is an idol factory, and if we are not willing to see and smash our idols then we will make room for them and make an excuse for them. Are you willing to recognize your idols? Will you do what it takes to destroy them? So long as our idols remain, we are kept in bondage to their rule. Through 1 Samuel 5 and 6 idolatry and its consequences are clearly on display, not only in pagan non-believers but also among the people of God.
