1 Samuel chapter 4 is a contrast the the previous chapter. In chapter 3 Samuel hears and pursues the call of God on his life, and the result is that he is blessed and so is everyone around him. But in chapter 4 we see that all the other spiritual and political leaders have abandoned God’s voice and call. The result is that they are cursed and everyone around them is as well. The tragic events that unfold in 1 Samuel 4 serve as a warning to us that being “spiritual” and even having “biblical precedent” does not guarantee godliness. The schemes of man do not produce the glory of God. If we are not living for the glory of God, then what exactly are we doing? The Christian life is to be lived in pursuit of and in magnification of God’s glory in every aspect of our lives. But it is quite possible to have ‘Ichabod’, literally ‘inglorious’, written over our lives because the glory of God has departed. Take care not not fall into the sinful trap of reducing God to a spiritual lucky-charm that you pull out to get you out of a tight spot. God will not be backed into a corner to perform for you. His glory is our highest goal.
