With the enemy on the run, Saul finds himself in a strategic and defining moment. Saul has the opportunity to overtake the enemy and ensure a total and complete victory, but his character stands in the way and the enemy escapes. The substance of godly character was completely missing from Saul's life and instead of choosing repentance and submission to the Lord, he decided to try to cover his lack of substance with mere appearance. The appearance of spirituality can be an elaborate cover for a fraudulent heart...and that is exactly what was taking place in Saul. The plot thickens and reaches its height when Saul attempts to execute his own son, Jonathan, in order to save face. True spirituality is measured by depth of relationship with Jesus, and there is no other measurement. All of the things we could do such as spiritual disciplines, good works, generosity, and the like are not powerful enough to produce holiness...only relationship with Jesus can perform such a miracle. When these things flow out of a relationship with Jesus then, and only then, will they have tremendous power in our lives. Whose glory are you living for? Your own? Or the glory of Jesus?
