What does it mean when God says He is wants “a man after His own heart”? In 1 Samuel 13 we find this phrase used, but not in the way we would expect. God unveils this desire and expectation through Samuel to Saul, but from the negative perspective. It is an indictment upon Saul about the kind of man he is not. The facade of Saul’s life is being removed and as his true character is exposed it becomes clear that his heart is much worse than anyone could tell from the outside. Being after God’s heart is not about being perfect, it is about being repentant…and this is where Saul was lacking. If you refuse to take responsibility for your sin, then you will refuse to repent, and there is no forgiveness for someone hardened against the truth of their own depravity.
