I have good news and bad news. Well not me. Jesus does.In our passage for this Sunday we listen to Jesus giving his disciples unbelievably great news. Their dreams are coming true right in front of their eyes. However, a nightmare seems to be twisted into those dreams. The good news is wrapped in a bad news package. Not only is Jesus predicting his own suffering and pain, he is calling his disciples to follow him right into it.Every follower of Jesus will face moments, seasons even, when to follow Jesus means to deny ourselves what we are convinced is what we need to lead a happy life. Yet, in another upside down inside out teaching from Jesus, he tells us that sometimes denying ourselves and giving up what we think we need most is actually the pathway to the thriving life we all long for. Often times with Jesus, losing is winning.This weekend read our passage, Luke 8:18-27, even extend the reading to verses 28-36. Pray for me and I will pray for you. Let’s ask Jesus to give us a vision of his beauty that would make us willing and ready to deny ourselves and follow him.Pastor David
