Listen "Know the Signs: The Relapse Before the Relapse"
Episode Synopsis
I’m hyperaware of my emotional and spiritual well-being knowing that a relapse in either of these areas often precedes a physical relapse, picking up a drink. I’ve got tools now to address these feelings before they escalate. Sobriety allows me to recognize the early signs of disturbance—whether it be despair, frustration, or self-doubt—and process them. I can take action by reaching out for support, attending meetings, or seeking professional help. I am no stranger to talk-therapy.
For so long I had an illusion that alcohol was the solution to all my problems. Really it just helped me to ignore my problems. Guess what happens to problems when you ignore them.
Facing the disability left from my stroke, addressing grief from losing loved ones, and simply dealing with everyday frustrations, requires hard work to avoid a relapse.
My journey has no finish line; I reach mile markers and then I push on. As I rise, I aim to bring others with me, just as my program encourages. Sharing this podcast has been an integral part of that—helping me stay accountable and connected while offering support to others walking a similar path.
