There was a time when I woke up with a hangover every day, and the only thing that could fix it was wine for breakfast. I added a little OJ and voilà ! I lived in a cycle of selfish survival, isolating myself, running on empty, and numbing the emotional pain. Today, with chronic physical pain in my head from my vestibular disorder, I once again wake with a hangover feeling on most days. But it has taught me the value of my sobriety, connections, creativity, and spirituality. Through community, I’ve learned that I’m not unique in my daily struggles. I work on the delicate balance between what fills my cup and what drains it. Whether it’s painting, sewing, leading in the Creativity in Vestibular Recovery support group, or simply showing up for others, service is now the cornerstone of my emotional healing which influences my physical healing.Emotional sobriety, imagination, and creativity allow me to save my own life. Optimism is more than a feeling. It can become an action. Optimism can be both cultivated with action and leveraged for action. Tomorrow I’m going to share a new concept I learned today called Spoon Theory. “Spoonies” manage energy with a chronic illness by measuring it in spoonfuls. We’ll call it pacing yourself with purpose.
