Listen "Drinking Dreams to Disability Dreams: Processing Life’s Changes"
Episode Synopsis
When I got sober, I started having drinking dreams that were unsettling to wake from thinking I had relapsed. After realizing it was only a dream, I was relieved but anxious. The same thing happened when I began attending stroke support groups. My dreams shifted navigating the world with a disability, whether it was loss of one of my limbs, my speech, or my vision. After medical retirement in 2023, my subconscious found another theme. A reoccurring dream began where I took an extended vacation without PTO and was anxiously waiting to be fired. And then there’s the classic dream where I never actually graduated from college. That is payback for not remembering my real graduation because I was drunk. When I experience a life transition, my dreams follow, pulling my uncertainties into my alternative dreaming universe. With time in sobriety, I realized my dreams weren’t something to fear. They weren’t warnings or signs that I was doomed. They were just my brain processing change in its own way. My subconscious takes extra time to catch up with reality. Now, instead of dwelling on what happened in my dream, I acknowledge that it’s part of adjusting to a new way of life. Even good change takes time to settle in to, and if my dreams are any indication, I’m simply in the process of moving forward with my disability. For more information, visit me at recoverydailypodcast.com or email me at [email protected].Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and YouTube.
