This week on Episode 122 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast I sit down for a talanoa with Vea Mafile’o. She is a freelance film director / producer, production designer and artist, of Tongan, English, Scottish and Māori ancestry who has filmed and exhibited extensively throughout the Pacific. Her debut feature For My Father’s Kingdom made its World Premiere in the Berlin Film Festival 2019, won a Jury Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and placed third for the Melbourne International documentary audience awards. It was the first Pacific Island feature documentary funded by the NZFC and first in the world to be directed & produced by Tongan women. Vea is the Managing Director of @taropatchcreative, a family-led art initiative that champions the storytelling of Pasifika and Maori communities. She is also the co-founder and Director of the visual production company Malosi pictures based in Auckland.
