Listen "Deuteronomy Chapters 14:3 - 15:11, Episode 188"
Episode Synopsis
In this week’s episode (Deut. 14:3 - 15: 11) we read about what foods the Israelites could and couldn’t eat. We talked about a couple of reasons why they were given food restrictions: 1. Because they were to be set apart as God’s holy people (see verse 2) and 2. Many of the restricted foods would keep them from getting diseases (for instance from birds that eat dead animals). Although these food laws were for the Israelites at that time, we can still learn from their restrictions One thing for us to see here is that we can’t do everything the world does. We also touched on tithing. The law required the Israelites to give a tithe (10%) of their crops and goods to the Levites for their upkeep and for the upkeep of the tabernacle. In the New Testament there’s not a tithing law (10%), but we are expected to give generously and cheerfully whatever God tells us to give (2 Cor. 9:5-7). Ten percent, although not mandated in our new covenant, is a good starting place. We should give for the same reasons the Israelites gave…thanking God for His provisions, His protection, thank Him for delivering us (saving us), and just for all that He has done for us. There are many way for us to give: our finances, our time, our talents, etc. As we give and empty ourselves, God fills us right back up.
