John Brian Anthony, Dayak Political Analyst
*Inequities in Sarawak's Civil Service: The Dayak Representation Challenge*
In a question and answer session in Parliament. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Sabah and Sarawak Affairs Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali told Parliament that only 4.8% (48,645 people) of Sarawak bumiputras work in the federal civil service. The total number of federal civil servants is currently 1.1 million people. John detailed that the term Bumiputra Sarawak is a mixture of Sarawak Malays and Sarawak Dayaks. Usually Malays will take 70% of the quota, the rest for Dayaks. This means that there are only approximately 12 thousand Dayaks in the federal civil service. I see many Dayaks who are qualified, highly educated and high achievers. I am sure we are discriminated against. The civil government should rectify this situation and evaluate applications based on merit. Not a racial quota. Second, John mentioned that in Sarawak there are 35 Dayak state assembly seats, which were won by GPS. Why until now no special provision has been given to the Dayak people to develop land and trade. In the 2024 budget, page 78 is mentioned. Focus communities (a) Orang Asli- The Orang Asli community is allocated 333 million ringgit in 2024 compared to 305 million ringgit in 2023. The allocation covers the implementation of socioeconomic development projects, infrastructure in the orang asli villages and the provision of social assistance. I call on all the YBs of the Dayak people to meet with PMX so that there is a special provision for the Dayak people in the 2024 budget. I am confident of cooperation in the unity government. PMX will allocate accordingly.
