The great wall of China was built as a defense against wandering tribes that invaded China from time to time. Parts of the wall date from the fourth century BC.
The first emperor of a united China, Shi Huang Di, connected these parts during his reign in the late third century BC.
The wall is built of earth and stone and it was built entirely by hand.
