Professor Jerry Davis has long advocated for clear and deep thinking about the ways in which corporations are changing, and the implications for the ways in which we live our lives. In this conversation, he talks with Anita about his book on taming big tech companies to serve the public interest. When Anita asks Jerry to imagine what he would do if he were in charge of everything, he wrestles with the paradox between how he would wield big-institutional authoritarianism to stop climate change while preserving small-institutional democracy to preserve local voices. There’s nothing but paradox all around us, and yet, we agreed, we need to focus on how institutions can develop outside of conventional nation-states and companies to reshape how well-intentioned citizens can affect constructive change.
