Listen "Responding to Needs in Afghanistan: From Humanitarian Relief to Development"
Episode Synopsis
On November 17, PRIO hosted a panel that took us back to the early autumn of 2021 and examined how the international donor community responded to the Taliban takeover. Humanitarian assistance was rapidly scaled up to prevent the worst-case scenarios. The panel also looked at the experiences of national and international NGOs who continued working in the rural communities, supporting basic services in health, education, and food security at a time when the international funding of the public sector in Afghanistan was cut off. How has the aid architecture developed over this last year? What opportunities, hurdles, and gaps can be identified in moving from a humanitarian response to sustainable development?SpeakersZarqa YaftaliRoxanne SharpourLiv KjølsethArne StrandThe event was chaired by Karim Merchant.
