🎸 Power to the Pinky – Episode 22: Fingerpicking Posture
Welcome back! Today we’re zooming in on one of the most important elements of fingerstyle technique: your posture. In this episode, we’ll break down exactly how to position your hand for relaxed, efficient, beautiful fingerpicking. We’ll talk wrist angle, tension (or the lack of it!), thumb placement, how to properly curl your I–M–A fingers, and the difference between rest stroke and free stroke. We’ll wrap up with some simple quarter-note exercises using the PIMA pattern — including trying the pattern backwards for an extra coordination challenge.
🎧 What You’ll Hear:
✅ How to find a natural wrist angle and avoid unnecessary tension
✅ Thumb placement: where it should sit and how it should move
✅ Curling the I, M, and A fingers for proper attack and tone
✅ Rest stroke vs. free stroke — what they are and when to use each
✅ Quarter-note PIMA exercises (forward and backward) to build foundation and flow
