There is a new way of handling PHP extensions in the works. The pressure is on to get a release out sooner than later, because the current way is failing under the newer PHP 8 releases.

The new PHP Installer for Extensions ("PIE") is under development, under the auspices of The PHP Foundation. PIE is a modern take on distributing and installing PHP extentions. With a big inspiration from Composer.
