Listen "#99 | The Year of Jubilee: God's Economy of Freedom and Forgiveness, Part 2"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode we continue our exploration of the year of Jubilee and how that relates to Jesus. God promised the Iraelites that in the 48th year before the 50th year of Jubilee that he would give them 3x the harvest to last them through the 49th sabbatical year, the 50th Jubilee year, and the 51st year when they would begin sowing their fields with seed again. This promise was given to assure Israel that if they pursued God's way of economics and environmental steardship that he would provide for them and their families. In order to keep the Year of Jubilee, the Israelites would need to store and preserve the harvest from the 48th year and not plant in the 49th or 50th year. In other words, they would have to resist the urge to approach the triple harvest from the 48th year as a way of snowballing their wealth by continuing to plant in the 49th and 50th year. The year of Jubilee required the Israelites to see the land and its harvest from God's perspective. If they did, they would dwell safely in the land and eat to the full of its produce.
While many of you listening to this podcast likely don't struggle with worrying about where your next meal will come from, there are many people who do. But regardless of whether or not we struggle with that kind of situation, we're all tempted to seek security and wealth in ways that cause us to see material goods from a worldly perspective. Jesus addresses this when he tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness/justice, and all the basic needs of life will be "added" to us. Unlike the Israelites in the Old Covenant, in the New Covenant we do not receive all the resources we need up front before we prioritize God and his justice. We receive what we need as we seek first the kingdom of God and his justice. In other words, under the New Covenant it requires a greater level of trust and obedience than was required in the Old Covenant Year of Jubilee. This requires us to see material goods from God's perspective. We cannot serve both God and riches. If we prioritize God and his kingdom then God will give us what we need.
Key Passages
Leviticus 25:18-22
Matthew 6:24-33
