Listen "#95 | Leviticus and Atonement: The Day of Atonement Part 2"

Episode Synopsis

In this episode we continue to look at the Day of Atonement as a modified version of the purification offering. Specifically, we look at how the second goat - the so-called scapegoat - plays a part in the Day of Atonement. What's interesting is that Jesus is never identified by any of the New Testament writers with the "scapegoat". Contrary to popular belief, Jesus is never said to function like the scapegoat on the Day of Atonement. The New Testament writers only identified Jesus with the first goat who is killed and whose blood is taken into the Holy of Holies to cleanse the Ark of the Covenant.
The writer of Hebrews compares and contrasts Jesus with the first goat of the Day of Atonement by saying Christ offered himself as a spotless and undefected human being to God by the Spirit in his death, and then through his resurrection and ascension he brings his life-giving blood into the heavenly tabernacle to offer cleansing for our sins in the presence of God. Christ's blood, in contrast to the blood of the first goat on the Day of Atonement, can cleanse the deep places of our humanity - our very conscience. It can wash away every feeling of guilt that we carry from our sin. In this way, it cleanses our conscience from dead works - things we have done that produce death in us or other people. Whether we experience a clean conscience or not depends on whether or not we trust the power and perfection of Christ's life-giving blood. From God's perspective we are already cleansed by the blood of Christ. The important question is whether or not we trust God when he says that Christ's blood has cleansed and forgiven us.
