Listen "#82 | Exodus and Atonement: Blood of the Covenant"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode we explore the encounter between God, Moses, Aaaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the 70 elders of Israel in Exodus 24. The nature of the Mosiac Covenant is framed around four important symbols: altar of sacrifice, the burnt and peace offering, the sprinkling of blood, and eating a meal with God. Each one of these symbols tells us something about the kind of relationship God wants to have with Israel.
The phrase "blood of the covenant" is used by Jesus when he eats his final meal with his disciples, what we often call The Lord's Supper. This connection between Exodus 24 and The Lord's Supper suggests some interesting parallels, and further substantiates the idea that the Lord's Supper was not a Passover meal, but rather a covenant making meal similar to the covenant making meal in Exodus 24. One important contrast between Exodus 24 and the Lord's Supper is that the blood in Exodus 24 goes "on" the people, but the blood of the covenant in the Lord's Supper goes "in" the disciples. The implication, in keeping with the nature of the new covenant, is that the life and cleansing that comes from Jesus goes deeper and further than the life and cleansing that comes from the sacrificial animals. It goes deep inside of us - the very core of our being.
Key Passages:
Exodus 24
Matthew 26:25-30
Video on the timeline of Jesus' death, which establishes why Jesus could not be celebrating the passover meal with his disciples the night before he died.
