Listen "#45 | Father Abraham Part 3"

Episode Synopsis

In this episode we jump into the story of Abraham offering Isaac. This is a difficult story to talk about because, in reality, it is quite intense. Despite it raising lots of questions, we think this story, when placed in the context of the larger story of Abraham, reveals a relational side of God that is often overlooked. God is a real "person" and is actually affected by us. Our relationship with him is a real relationship, and according to this story, our relationship with God unfolds in real time. When the Angel of the Lord says, "Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me..." we are seeing into the very heart of God. God wants to live in a genuine relationship with us, but not just any relationship. He wants a relationship built off trust, and an ever increasing intimacy that continues to remove every barrier between us.
The interesting thing about this story, is that Abraham once again is demonstrating a resurrection kind of faith. He believed that even if he sacrificed Isaac, and his body was completely burned up, that God would somehow raise him from the dead to fulfill his original promise to make Abraham a father of many nations. The reason we can call Abraham our father, and therefore qualify for the blessing, is that our faith in God raising Jesus from the dead makes us "children of Abraham."
