Listen "#28 | The Plot Thickens: Deepening corruption in human nature and the Nephilim Giants"
Episode Synopsis
WARNING: This episode may not be for your children. Please take a listen before playing it with them around.
In this episode we explore the events of Genesis 6:1-12 and how they contribute to our understanding of the story of the Bible. We compare and contrast the incursion of the rebellious divine being in Genesis 3 with Adam and Eve, and the incursion of the rebellious divine beings in Genesis 6, identified in Genesis 6 as the "Sons of God." In both events the enemy is wanting to insert something into human nature to corrupt it. Apparently, the enemy was not satisfied with the level of damage, dysfunction, and death brought about by Adam and Eve eating the fruit. 1400 years later the enemy decided to catalyze evil to a new level, one that would further the corruption that Adam and Eve started in themselves.
Through the conjugal relations between these divine beings and the daughters of men, a hybrid seed of half human and half divine beings emerged. These hybrid beings were called Nephilim, and they were towering figures in both culture and stature. The net effect of their presence on the earth was a massive epidemic of violence and corruption upon all flesh - humans and animals alike.
But this story is not a one and done episode in the story of the Bible. The impact of these events in Genesis 6 go far beyond the days of Noah. The hybrid beings show up in later in the story of Abraham, the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the story of David and Goliath, and if we take our cue from inter-testamental literature like the book of Enoch, they also show up in the ministry of Jesus - although in a different form.
The good news is that Jesus has come to bring us into the fullness of what God created us to be. Instead of corrupting human nature, Jesus heals and transforms it.
