In the gospels, one of the most startling illustrations we see is when the Syrophenician woman approaches Jesus, desperate to obtain a healing for her daughter how has a devil. Jesus appears to quickly dismiss her, but alas, this is a 'mother on a mission' and she will not be dismissed so easily, not even by Jesus! There is much for us to learn from this brave woman who would not tale the Lord's no for an answer. This unnamed Syrophenician woman was a gentile and a Canaanite, genetically speaking she was the natural enemy of the Jew. But her desperate condition had driven her to the point where all she wanted was a healing for her daughter, and she would do anything to get it. Including throwing herself down at the feet of a Jew who was turning her away. Many times people will contact me, telling me that no matter what they do, they don't hear from the Lord. I know saved Christians who tell me they have stopped hearing from the Lord, and that is doubly sad. But this amazing gentile Syrophenician woman knew something that none of the smartest Pharisees or Sadducees who ran the Temple knew, she knew how to catch the Lord in His words and have her prayer answered. She has much to teach us who live here in the 21st century, and we would do well to heed her wisdom and tenacity.
