"My mom is white and English. And my dad is black and American. And he grew up in segregation in West Virginia. And I really don't think either of them expected me to experience racism. .. When I got older when I was 12, 11/12/13 and these kids were telling me, 'Don't let your dad pick you up. We can't let my parents know he's black. Don't tell them you're black'. I didn't tell my parents any of that because I knew at that point, that was gonna hurt them. You know, and so I didn't share that with them.
