In this Winter Solstice/Christmas podcast we hear two stories and an interview about "trees" - the krumkake, the noble fir, and the lingonberry. That is, the challenge of making a functional krumkake, the odyssey of cutting our own ragged Christmas tree, and a special on-site interview with Pacific Northwest lingonberry farmer, Leslie Lindskog. We also investigate the origins of the beautiful Ave Marias of Bach/Gounod and Franz Schubert. Join us!

The krumkake recipe I now stand by (it's bulletproof), is from Kristi Bissell's True North Kitchen Blog. Tusen takk!
A great time for using lingonberries is in Kristi's lingonberry sauce over Swedish pancakes.
When in season, you can sometimes pick up fresh lingonberries from the Lindskog-Sundqvist farm (the one we visited in this podcast) at Scandinavian Specialties.
Getting or decorating a Christmas tree has always gone better for me with Vince Guaraldi's Linus and Lucy to listen to.
A lovely video of the Bach/Gunod Ave Maria sung by Laura Ullrich with Hans Hermann Jansen on piano.
The great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, sings the Schubert Ave Maria in this 2019 recording in Los Angeles, CA USA.

My daughter demonstrates how to roll up the krumkae on a cone maker, and it's quite hot! (ES Photo)
My daughter, displaying the 10 not-so-successful krumkake we struggled to make (we got better!) (ES Photo)
Lingonberry sauce we made from Sundqvist farm lingonberries, over meat and potatoes (ES Photo)
Leslie Lindskog picks cranberries on the farm using a special scoop that strips them off the branches, and then puts them in a winnowing tray where leaves and stems fall through the slots (and are "winnowed" out). (ES Photo)
Our annual trip to cut our own Christmas tree was always quite and adventure (pxhere.com)
