Episode Synopsis

Brought to Light is a comics anthology most well known for its story Shadowplay: The Secret Team by Alan Moore and Bill Sienkiewicz. Published by the defunct Eclipse Comics and (the equally defunct) Christic Institute in 1988, this Moore & Sienkiewicz collaboration largely serves as a brief re-telling of the crimes of the CIA, tracing the secretive organization’s connections to fascism from its post WWII inception up to 1988. Shadowplay features some of Bill Sienkiewicz’s finest illustratio work as well as equally evocative prose from Moore.
For listeners unfamiliar with the comic, we assume or recommend that you have some familiarity with Iran/Contra, or the CIA’s activities in the global south or Southeast Asia in the 20th century. Lan and Salt opt less to re-tread over the history of those events, and instead look at how this collaboration between Moore and Sienkiewicz uses rhetoric and art to express these ideas to readers. We ask ourselves some questions along the way too, chiefly, why aren’t there any comics like this anymore? And what happened to the Christic Institute? What happened to Eclipse? And wait, Mitt Romney shows up! Guess who else is here, that’s right it’s Bill Sienkiewicz as Spider-Man, sitting on a cop’s bike! All that and much more.
