The reasons for many of the customs we still keep, no longer apply. This is partly because these customs have many other benefits that we wouldn't want to lose just because the initiating reason has expired. For example, an individual might make life-style improvements because of a health scare. When the threat has passed, the individual would be well advised to continue with those improvements. So too when the initiating reason for instituting a custom has passed, the benefits of keeping the custom may still apply. But there are other reasons too why we cling to old customs even when their reasons no longer seem to apply. This episode explores these reasons.
