This is an excerpt from a book length essay the aim of which was to explore how the modernist work of art derives its structure from the inside. The means through which I set out to do this was mimetic: I would explore this idea by writing an essay that itself derived its structure from the inside - that like the modernist work of art is devoid of scaffolding.
