Making Money Minute with Ron Hiebert - Broadening The Tax Base

Our progressive tax rates are currently structured, so that the top 20% of Canadian income earners, pay 57% of total taxes collected in Canada. The bottom 20% of Canadian income earners, pay 2% of total taxes. The idea that high income earners manage to find loopholes, and get away with not paying their fair share just doesn’t mesh with reality. Shouldn’t we figure out how to get the bottom 20% the skills they need to get good paying jobs, so they could contribute as well. The solution is to broaden the tax base not shrink it.
