Listen "#59 - Bill Boyne: Wisdom & Funny Stories from 38 YEARS of TEACHING"

Episode Synopsis

Bill Boyne is a dedicated educator with a teaching career spanning four decades. We will delve into how he has managed to survive nearly 40 years in the profession, his reasons for continuing to teach even after retirement, and some humorous stories from his extensive career. Bill's insights and experiences promise to be both enlightening and entertaining.

Bill Boyne spent 36 years in the classroom and retired two years ago, although his retirement has been quite active. He continues to work as a substitute and contract teacher, enjoying the flexibility and freedom that comes with not being tied to a regular teaching schedule. This new phase allows him to explore different teaching opportunities without long-term commitments, making this period some of the best years of his career. Without the pressures of standardized testing and policy changes, Bill finds great satisfaction in his current role.

In his first year of substitute teaching, Bill taught a grade 5 Ukrainian class and handled several long-term assignments at the local high school, including a stint in French Immersion Science. These varied experiences have kept his retirement busy and fulfilling. Bill’s teaching adventures will soon take a brief pause as he travels to Australia for his oldest son's wedding and later to India for another celebration and a tour of the Golden Triangle. These trips exemplify the active and fulfilling life he leads post-retirement.

Reflecting on his career, Bill acknowledges that teaching was not his initial career choice. After exploring various paths, including pursuing a master's degree, he ultimately decided to become a teacher at 29. The early years were challenging due to economic recession and the struggle to find steady work. Bill’s journey included working with troubled youth in special needs settings, which, while rewarding, left him eager for more typical classroom experiences. His perseverance eventually led to a stable position with a continuous contract, bringing much-needed stability for his family and career.

Bill attributes his longevity in teaching to his sense of humor and traditional teaching methods. Over the years, he became known for his structured approach, quick grading, and commitment to teaching students how to study effectively. His humor evolved from a serious young teacher to a seasoned educator who could use humor to create a positive and engaging classroom environment. Even in retirement, Bill’s passion for teaching remains strong, driven by the joy of connecting with students, the variety of teaching settings, and the satisfaction of making a positive impact on young lives.
