In verses 1-3, John assures us that we are Children of God and that we will be like Him when we see Jesus Christ in the second coming. Because this is the hope of the believer, we should purify ourselves as He is pure. Conversely, Verses 4-6, share that those who live in habitual lawlessness do not abide in Jesus. Now, John gives us the reason why the children of God practice righteousness and can not habitually sin; because we are born of God. In the new birth, we have received the Holy Spirit who gives us a new nature and new desires.
