Listen "Only One Source"
Episode Synopsis
I’ve been reading Jesus’ exhortations and warnings to the churches in the book of Revelation. Today’s reading was regarding the church in Laodicea, and in the translation that I’m using, Jesus said this of himself: “These are the words of the Amen, of him who is the ever faithful and truthful witness, who is the ultimate source of God’s creation.”
I was interested in that last phrase because I’d not read of Jesus being the “source” of creation. So when I dug deeper, sure enough, the greek word carries the idea of “originating source.” As one commentator put it, Jesus was “God’s agent in creation [because] he began it.” (Gundry) Or, as we read in John’s Gospel 1:3, “All things came into existence through him.”
Jesus was referring to himself in this way because he was about to confront the Laodicean church with their self-deception: “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” Revelation 3:17 (NIV) Then he proceeds to counsel them to, in effect, come to him for all that they lack. One commentator put it this way: "The Laodicean church will have to get the things they need from him through whom these things came into existence.” (Gundry)
So here’s something to think about: whenever you are in need of anything, there is only one place to go, or, more accurately, there is only one Person who can supply your need. Jesus — who is the originating source of everything that exists — He alone can meet your need.
