Listen "Living Life Looking Up"
Episode Synopsis
In Colossians 3:1-4 (NET) we read, “1 Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, 3 for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him.”
Notice how the key to the apostle Pauls exhortation is his repetition of what he calls, “things above.” We are to “keep seeking the things above”, and “keep thinking about things above” over against “things on the earth.”
What is he referring to? He goes on: “for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Perhaps there’s our clue. Our life before being united to Christ was derived from whatever on earth gave us a sense of security and wellbeing. We might condense that down to family, friends, money, and an assortment of whatever pleasures we could enjoy. But when we came to Christ that lifeline died. No more were we to derive any sense of security or wellbeing from anything or anyone but Jesus. We are on sight — so to speak — not to gain something from what life in this world offers us — no matter how near and dear — but to give something, namely, whatever Jesus puts on our hearts to give at any particular moment.
Our life truly is “hidden with Christ in God” and we will only know who we are when Christ, our life, appears. In the mean time we have work to do. We must redirect our hearts and thoughts to things above — the interests of Jesus as they relate to our day to day routine.
