Listen "Is It a Hardware or Software Problem?"
Episode Synopsis
A friend recently asked me, What do you think of the following paraphrased statement…the author said he preaches not “fixing what’s wrong with ourselves” as much as uncovering the true nature of what God created in us that we’ve ignored or covered up with all the foolishness in our lives.
My response was, I guess I would ask, “do we have a hardware problem or simply a software problem?” In other words, is it just that we’ve been conditioned by our environment / the devil / and human weakness with foolishness that has programed junk into hardware that’s essentially intact? If so, then we just need to be reprogramed so that all the stupid coding, malware, and viruses are dealt with.
If, on the other hand, there is something fundamentally wrong with the hardware then no amount of reprograming is going to get anywhere.
The hardware must be fixed/replaced and then the reprograming can go forward.
It seems to me that the Bible points to both a hardware and software problem, and that there’s far more wrong with us than we could ever speculate. I look inside and see simply no end to what’s awry — in the words of song writer Bob Dylan — “everything is broken.”
The truth is that we must be born again, not just reprogramed. Without that we are still dead. But I will grant that henceforth our transformation is contingent upon the renewing of our minds, which could fall into the “software problem” category.
