Listen "Don't Be Fooled"
Episode Synopsis
“In James 1:12-16 (NLT) we read, 12 “God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13 And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. 16 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters.”
Then in Romans 7:11 (NIV) we read, “For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.”
Notice the same idea regarding temptation and sin coming through in each of these passages. Whenever we are being tempted we are being enticed and deceived by sin.
I read in a Bible commentary today a statement by Henry Vaughan (1621–95) who was a Welsh religious writer in the 16 hundreds. He highlighted three ways in which sin deceives us:
1) “we are deluded regarding the satisfaction to be found in sin. No man ever took a forbidden thing without thinking that it would make him happy, and no man never found that it did.
2) we are deluded regarding the excuse that can be made for it. Every man thinks that he can put up a defense for doing the wrong thing; but no man’s defense ever sounded anything else but futile when it is made in the presence of God.
3) we are deluded regarding the probability of escaping the consequences of it. No man sins without the hope that he can get away with it. But it is true that, soon or late, our sin will find us out.”
