Matthew 16:13–19 (NIV84) 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
Psalm 119:89 (NKJV) 89 Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.
Jesus is telling us two things in vs 18:
1.) Jesus is building a church comprised of a group of people who are shaped by His character and equipped by His Spirit.
2.) In speaking of the gates of Hell, He is describing His Church’s mission as one who is not occupied with economic reforms, military advances, or political power
Our Victory is related to our use of Prayer. In Matthew 16:
To Bind means to contract with God regarding what He has willed. I am saying, “Father, what you have willed I call forth on the earth.” | We bind boldly in prayer. | Binding is contingent on God’s timing.
Hebrews 6:12 (NIV84) 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
When you choose to stand in the gap with your eyes open, Jesus is saying you will discover earth can have everything Heaven has purchased.
We pray with our eyes open because the enemy is at work to trip us up
We pray with our eyes open because God is moving on our behalf to build our faith
We pray with our eyes open because we don’t want to miss the miracle moment; it is our next testimony.
