In 2012, amidst news of tsunamis, earthquakes, and economic woes, National Geographic explored Americans' views on a potential "Doomsday scenario." The survey revealed that over 62% believed a major catastrophe would strike the world within the next two decades. Furthermore, almost three-quarters (71%) attributed a major disaster in their lifetime to an act of God, not human actions. When asked about potential events in the U.S. over the next 25 years, the most feared were earthquakes (64%), hurricanes (63%), and terrorism (55%). These were followed by financial collapse (51%), significant blackouts (37%), a pandemic (29%), and nuclear fallout (14%).
