Listen "TRIGGERED: Why We React the Way We Do (Week 1)"
Episode Synopsis
You know that moment when someone says that thing and suddenly you're angrier than the situation deserves? Or when a small comment ruins your entire day? We've all got them—those buttons that when pushed, turn us into people we don't want to be.In this first message of the TRIGGERED series, we explore why we react the way we do. From lighthearted triggers like people who leave one square of toilet paper on the roll, to the heavier stuff like financial stress, broken trust, and feeling undervalued, we discover that our reactions reveal something deeper about what we truly look to for security. We unpack the four unhealthy ways most of us respond when triggered: reactive, suppressive, blaming, and numbing. And we introduce a better way—being emotionally responsive, where we're first aware of our emotional state and then able to influence our behavior when emotions kick in.Through Psalm 139, we learn that God designed us with emotions, and our capacity to feel deeply isn't a bug—it's a feature. We discover that our triggers reveal what we've made ultimate in life: control, approval, comfort, or success. These aren't just bad habits—they're spiritual issues pointing to what we're really looking to instead of God.The good news? Jesus faced ultimate triggers without losing His identity because His identity was secure in the Father. Through Him, that same security is ours. When you're secure in Christ, your triggers lose their power—because what you're desperately trying to protect, Jesus already secured for you. You're not broken. You're human. And understanding why you react is the first step to freedom.
