Jesus teaches us that love is not a feeling but a choice to meet someone's need regardless of whether they deserve it. Through the parable of the Good Samaritan, we learn that agape love is volitional action that seeks another person's good without expecting anything in return. While barriers like fear, anger, past hurt, and judgment make loving difficult people challenging, the Samaritan demonstrates that true love overcomes prejudice and acts with compassion. The expert in Jewish law could identify loving actions but couldn't overcome his hatred to name the Samaritan who showed perfect love. We're called to go and do likewise, choosing to love our neighbors by meeting their needs even when it's costly or uncomfortable.
