Episode Synopsis

The COVID-19 crisis has provoked one thing exceptionally well – the thinking and public discourse of the question “what is the meaning and purpose of all of this?” It has prompted various answers from “it’s a time to get to know your family better” to “this is a shift in the environment and culture for personal reinvention.” One of the catch-phrases that have accompanied this thinking is “everything happens for a reason.” I’ve used this term throughout my own life and especially during times of challenge, pain, and conflict. So what does this actually mean and, is it in fact – true? Further, if it is true, then what is the reason?
Everything happens for a reason boils down to our desire as humans to give meaning to our lives, that we do not, or have not lived in vain, but have lived for a purpose.
Most of us have sat quietly and reflected on our lives, both the beauty and the tragedy. Whatever age we are, there is an inherent desire for our own significance in our space in time, a mere blip in the 4.5 billion year history of planet earth.
