Listen "Rep. Madeleine Dean confronts House Speaker Johnson over Trump's AI post: 'You don't see that as racist?'"
Episode Synopsis
"You don't see that as racist? We need you desperately to lead." That's Congresswoman Madeleine Dean in part of an exchange with House Speaker Mike Johnson, captured by CNN.
The Montgomery County Democrat criticized the Republican speaker for not calling out the "racist, bigoted" AI-generated video tweeted by President Donald Trump.
She raised the issue during a back-and-forth with Johnson over the main issues prompting the government shutdown -- Medicaid cuts and expiring Obamacare tax credits.
The speaker told Dean the president's post "wasn't my style." The video was taken from a news conference after the president met on Monday with all four congressional leaders. It overlaid a cartoon sombrero and moustache on House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is Black, and altered Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's speech.
Tuesday night, a couple of hours before the government shutdown deadline, Trump posted another AI video -- altering Jeffries' appearance on MSNBC, during which the Democrat called the post "disgusting and bigoted." The president again superimposed a sombrero and moustache on Jeffries, and added an all-Trump mariachi band in the background.
