You just can't have it all at once."Leadership and Decision-Making"Recognizing your own limitations is one of the basic things about being a leader."  Learn about Alma: Rear Admiral Alma Lau Grocki, born and raised in Hawaii, and was the first woman from Hawaii to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981. She served at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as Ship Superintendent for Submarine NR-1, concurrently earning her Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, at the University of New Hampshire. At Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY), she was a Nuclear Ship Superintendent for numerous submarine overhauls, and the first woman officer to accompany her submarine on post-maintenance Sea Trials. In 1988 Grocki transferred to the Navy Reserve, serving nine Commanding Officer tours of maintenance units throughout the country. She was a volunteer U.S. Naval Academy Blue and Gold Area Coordinator for 20 years assisting high school students and Fleet sailors and Marines with admissions to the Academy. Grocki was recalled to active duty as the Director, Submarine Maintenance, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Deputy Operations, PHNSY, and Director, Fleet Maintenance, U.S. Pacific Fleet. She was the first SurgeMain National Director, the largest Navy Reserve program in history. Grocki retired in 2016 from the Navy after 35 years of service as Deputy, NAVSEA, Reserve Senior Engineering Duty Officer (EDO). She was responsible for creation and approval of the EDO Qualification insignia, now worn by all EDOs. Grocki consults for FlatironDragados overseeing the new PHNSY dry dock construction.
