Episode Synopsis

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery”): the time-honored Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using lacquer mixed with gold to highlight the beauty of imperfection.

Formerly The Duo, Kintsugi Conversations is a weekly podcast hosted by mother-daughter duo, Cyndi Mathis Louis and Allison Mathis Jones, aimed at impacting generational legacy in the spirit of kintsugi.

Cyndi published her first book, Missing Pieces, in 2010 and is a motivational speaker, philanthropist, and coach for moms looking to build and maintain amazing relationships with their children and passionate about using her voice to tell the stories of the hundreds of men, women, and children who would otherwise not be heard. Cyndi is also a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend, and someone who was lucky enough to find love and remarry after the devastating loss of her first husband. She grew up with a turbulent relationship with her mother and a non-existent relationship with her father. When she had her own daughter some years later, she knew that she wanted their relationship to be different. Now that the two have a unique and deep bond, they have set out to share their special relationship.

Allison is the woman behind allisonmathisjones.com where she shares her motherhood and lifestyle journey. She’s wife to DeQuan and mama to Harper and Jaxon. She also has her masters in marriage and family counseling and is dedicated to helping millennial individuals and couples to plan, adapt, and ultimately, flourish. While living in Japan, Allison learned of the art and mindset of kintsugi and began to apply this restoration technique to all aspects of life. After being diagnosed with and having surgery to remove a brain tumor, Allison wrote a children’s book, The Kintsugi Kid to inspire even the youngest to embrace their brokenness.

Cyndi and Allison share an extra special relationship and are passionate about helping other mother-daughter duos to not only accept their differences, but embrace them. The pair aim to bring light to the generational legacy they are building through candid conversations about current parenting points in the spirit of kintsugi. We can all turn our messes into messages and are each more valuable when repaired with care than we were before we were broken.
