He is a member of BAFTA and was awarded an MBE for Services to Local Government in the 2018 New Year Honours.He is something of an authority on the films of the Carry On era, and wrote the definitive histories of Pinewood Studios and Shepperton Studios, biographies of actress Dame Thora Hird, film producer Peter Rogers, and books for the BBC on Fawlty Towers and Last of the Summer Wine.
