In this supplement, scholars were invited to examine continuing professional development (CPD) in the health professions critically and innovatively as a means of stimulating the field. The objective of the invitation was to promote intellectual space to question existing ideas that may be widely accepted, but in need of letting go. Also, to introduce new ideas that may provide fruitful sparks in how we think about and approach existing, new, and future education problems and their solutions in CPD. We proposed a kind of conceptual renewal, intended to urge CPD scholars to creatively examine the value of prevailing theories and assumptions, and to propose new ones.
