Today we talk with Daniela Sedeno and Sonia Sedeno Mendoza regarding their experience with college and how they’re both in different college stages. Latinas going beyond high school is an accomplishment in itself. According to AAUW “The number of white women (39%) getting an associate or bachelor’s degree by the age of 29 is nearly twice as high as for Black women (21%) and Latinas (20%)”. It is clear that women of color are not expected to attend nonetheless graduate college. Although this statement may be right or not, it definitely goes beyond that since many students of color are unable to attend/ go beyond in college due to financial hardships. According to the Hechinger Report, “Hispanic students are also disproportionately low-income and the first in their families to seek higher educations, characteristics that make them more likely to drop out”. Many women of color suffer from a countless amount of hardships when it comes to attending college and after listening to both Daniela and Sonia it is clear that the struggle with Latinas in college goes far beyond a financial hardship.
