Have you ever been going through something difficult and someone tells you to "count it as joy" and you sort of shutdown because you feel so misunderstood? Or, have you ever tried to pull yourself by your own "joy-bootstraps" thinking that's what good Christians do, when facing a trial? James tells us in James 1:2 to "count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds..." and I fear we've gotten this verse all wrong. And in doing so, wreaked havoc on our souls.
